Top Safety Pick+ Safety Standards

Hopefully you never end up in this situation, but if you do, the Honda Odyssey is capable of keeping you safe.

We recently announced that the 2014 Honda Odyssey was the first minivan to receive the newly coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but never really explained what that new title means. Sure, the label sounds good, but unless you really understand exactly what it took for the Odyssey to get it, it can be confusing. So let’s look at the Top Safety Pick+ safety standards.

The plus rating was introduced last year when IIHS decided to add the small overlap front test. The test looks at what would happen if about 25 percent of the front end were to collide with a solid object on the driver’s side. It basically mimics a car running off the road and striking a tree or utility pole. The test has become one of the most difficult to pass because it really puts the frame to the test. Most frames are setup to handle with frontal impacts, but they are reinforced for head-on collisions, not necessarily corner collisions. This awkward collision also makes it difficult for the restraint and safety systems to protect the passenger as they move diagonally in the cabin, rather than forward or side to side. Even so, the Odyssey was able to score the top rating of “good” in the new test.

That rating is one of five that needs to be completed in order to earn the plus rating. IIHS has set the standards high. Vehicles must earn four good ratings in the five different tests, and can earn no less than “acceptable” in the fifth test. The five different tests include the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact and rollover test, plus assessments of seat/head restraints for their protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.

If you watch the video below, you can find out more about the small overlap frontal test, and see just how brutal the test is. Honda vehicles have been given Top Safety Pick ratings for many years now, but the first to get the new plus rating is the 2014 Honda Odyssey.
