2014 Honda Odyssey Top Safety Pick
The new Honda Odyssey was just released a short while ago, and it is already bringing in some awards. These awards are no small feats either. The 2014 Honda Odyssey just became the first minivan to be awarded the 2013 Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It’s officially the safest minivan available. The pick comes as no surprise to Honda which is still the car manufacturer with the most Top Safety Pick ratings, including most recently the 2013 Honda Civic and Accord. Let’s look at what makes the 2014 Honda Odyssey a Top Safety Pick.
Prior to the Odyssey, the 2013 Civic was the only vehicle which earned the highest rating in the small overlap front test. The test reproduces what would happen if only part of the vehicle’s bumper hit another vehicle or a more immobile object like a tree or pole. The small overlap front test had never been run on a minivan before, but confident in their new structural changes, Honda requested that the test be run.
Those structural changes include the addition of close to 60 pounds of high-strength steel to the frame which helps to absorb impact and send it throughout the frame, rather than through the cabin. Even with the extra weight, the 2014 Honda Odyssey still offers the highest fuel economy in its class. Another addition to the Odyssey is the extended side curtain airbag. The airbag was a major reason for the good rating in the small overlap front test, as it is designed to provide protection for offset crashes where the vehicle occupants are forced diagonally rather than straight.
