We thought it would be fun to compare the 1973 Honda Civic vs. 2013 Honda Civic Coupe to give you an idea of just how far the Honda Civic has come in its 40 years of availability in the American automotive market.  Why did we choose the 1973 Honda Civic vs. 2013 Honda Civic Coupe?  Well we chose to compare the Civic Coupe because the first Civic to arrive in America was also a coupe.  The first four-door and five-door hatchback Civic models didn’t arrive in America until the following year with the 1974 Civic models.

We’ve found some interesting things in our 1973 Honda Civic vs. 2013 Honda Civic Coupe comparison.  Take fuel economy for example; the 1973 Honda Civic achieved 40-MPG on the Highway while the 2013 Honda Civic Coupe now gets 39-MPG Highway[1].  At first glance and using basic math comparing the 1973 Honda Civic vs. 2013 Honda Civic Coupe puts the 1973 Civic model ahead for fuel economy.  True; but that’s without taking into account how much the Civic has grown and the safety, technology and performance you now get in a 2013 Honda Civic Coupe.

When it comes to performance the 1973 Honda Civic vs. 2013 Honda Civic Coupe comparison finds the 2013 Honda Civic Coupe, with its 140-hp 1.8L engine, has 90-hp more than the 1973 Civic, which had about 50-hp from its four-cylinder engine.  Also the 1973 Civic model weighed in at 1,500lbs while the 2013 Civic Coupe LX weighs in at 2,716/2789lbs, so the power increase has been greater than the weight gains for Civic.  Much of the weight gains have come from safety structures and features (high-strength steel, air bags, anti-lock brakes are a few), new technology (Navigation, Audio Systems, etc.) and other improvements that make today’s Civic such a desirable model to own.
